In a heartwarming rescue story, a Missouri woman discovered 11 tiny puppies nestled inside a hollow tree trunk, waiting for their mom to return. The brave pups, cold and hungry, poked their fuzzy heads out of the tree, catching the attention of a nearby homeowner.
The homeowner quickly contacted Tanya Meeks, president and founder of Ozarks Pet Rescue, who had been searching for the mama dog and her litter for weeks. “There’s this mom dog over here on Eighth Street … and there’s, like, 12 little heads sticking out of this tree trunk,” the homeowner explained.
The Rescue Mission
Meeks and her team rushed to the scene, where they managed to scoop out the first two puppies. However, the rescue quickly became challenging. The mama dog was protective, and the remaining pups retreated deeper into the tree, hiding in crevices too small for adult hands to reach.
Determined to save the puppies, Meeks called for backup. A young boy, the son of one of the rescue’s board members, stepped up to help. “He climbed up into the tree and started pulling the puppies out one by one,” Meeks told The Dodo. “He barely fit inside there, but once he was able to squeeze into the hole, he started grabbing the puppies.”

A Bittersweet Outcome
All 11 puppies were eventually rescued, but the mama dog, frightened by the commotion, bolted before she could be secured. The puppies were taken to the vet for evaluation. Sadly, the smallest pup, severely anemic, did not survive the first night. The remaining puppies were deemed healthy, and Meeks focused on reuniting them with their mom.
Reuniting the Family
Reuniting the mama dog, named Aida, with her puppies proved to be a challenge. Despite daily efforts, Aida avoided the rescuers’ traps. Finally, Meeks played recordings of the puppies’ cries near the trap. To her surprise, Aida approached and began licking the back of her neck.
“It just brought tears to our eyes when we finally caught her,” Meeks said.
When Aida was reunited with her puppies, she was overwhelmed with joy. “She kept running up to me and licking me, like, ‘Is this real? Is this real?’ And the puppies were just screaming and running towards her to get reattached,” Meeks recalled.
A New Beginning
Once safe in a foster home, Aida’s entire demeanor changed. No longer burdened by the hardships of life on the streets, she blossomed into a loving and affectionate dog. “She’s just the sweetest girl,” Meeks said. “She’s doing absolutely amazing.”
Now, Aida and her puppies are thriving, soaking up love and care until they’re ready to find their forever homes.
