At Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, the average stay for a cat is 23 days. But for Monique, a playful and affectionate 2-year-old cat, it’s been 121 days—and counting. Despite her sweet nature, Monique has been overlooked time and time again. Why? She has feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a manageable condition that means she can’t live with other cats.
To help her find a home, the shelter threw Monique a birthday party on Valentine’s Day, hoping to attract potential adopters. But when the big day arrived, no one showed up.
Monique’s Story: A Cat Full of Love
Monique is the kind of cat who lights up a room. When she first arrived at Battersea, she was shy, but it didn’t take long for her true personality to shine.
“Monique is a really sweet and affectionate young cat,” said Nikki Cummins, a communications officer at Battersea. “She’s always happy to see us and loves spending time with people.”
Despite her playful and curious nature, Monique’s FIV diagnosis has made her adoption journey challenging. She needs a home with no other cats and an enclosed outdoor space where she can safely explore.
A Valentine’s Day Birthday Party
The shelter staff decided to throw Monique a birthday party on Valentine’s Day, hoping to draw attention to her story.

“What better time for people to consider bringing extra love into their life than Valentine’s Day?” Cummins said. The team decorated the cattery, put Monique front and center, and crossed their fingers that someone would fall in love with her.
But despite their efforts, not a single person came to the party.
A Disappointing Day, But Hope Remains
While the staff was heartbroken, Monique remained her cheerful self.
“We were disappointed that no potential adopters came, but our staff and volunteers made sure Monique got plenty of cheek rubs and love,” Cummins shared.
Monique may not have found her forever home that day, but the shelter knows her perfect family is out there.
What Monique Needs

Monique is looking for a home where she can be the only pet, with a secure outdoor space to explore. She’d do well with older children who understand how to give her space as she settles in.
“Monique is blissfully unaware of her newfound fame,” Cummins said. “She’s content at the shelter but would love a home of her own where she can give and receive all the love she deserves.”
