Denzel Washington just announced a slew of new projects. With them comes a surprise that many may not have expected.
Denzel Washington, 69, is preparing to step away from Hollywood. He will do so after completing a final slate of films. This signals the end of a career that has spanned decades.
Speaking with Australia’s Today show, Washington shared, “I don’t know how many more films I’m going to make. Probably not that many.”
His upcoming endeavors include reprising his role as Othello, a character he first played at age 22.
“I’m about to play Othello at 70,” the two-time Academy Award winner revealed.
Beyond that, he’s hinted at collaborating with Steve McQueen. Ryan Coogler is reportedly crafting a role for him in the next Black Panther film. Washington also mentioned projects like King Lear before teasing, “After that, I’m going to retire.”
Washington’s career began in 1977 with the made-for-television film Wilma, followed by his feature debut in 1981’s Carbon Copy. Since then, he has become one of the most respected actors in Hollywood. He is known for unforgettable performances in films such as Glory, Training Day, and Malcolm X. His work has consistently showcased his talent and passion, earning him widespread acclaim and numerous accolades.
Earlier this year, Washington opened up about his desire to be involved with Gladiator II.
“There are very few films left for me to make that I’m interested in,” the actor said. “I have to be inspired by the filmmaker.”
