Bald and Sunburned Rescue Pup Transforms into a Fluffy Great Pyrenees

A Desperate Situation in Louisa County
Huddled in a ditch along a rural road in Louisa County, Iowa, a small and badly sunburned puppy named Willow awaited a miracle. Local law enforcement officers discovered her in dire condition and rushed her to It Takes A Village, an animal rescue organization committed to saving lives.

First Steps Toward Recovery
When Karen Hartman, a foster coordinator, first laid eyes on Willow, she was heartbroken.

“She was devastated,” shared Meagan Koehler, president and founder of It Takes A Village.

Willow’s journey of healing began with a trip to Muscatine Vet Hospital for emergency care. During the ride, Willow pressed against Hartman, seeking comfort and reassurance. Once stabilized, she was placed in Hartman’s foster care, where she received medicated baths and ongoing treatment for her delicate condition.

Willow’s Surprising Transformation
At first, the rescue team speculated about Willow’s breed based on the shape of her paws, but her hairless state left them uncertain. Over time, however, something incredible happened — Willow’s hair began to grow back.

“We started seeing signs of hair growth,” Koehler said. “It was patchy at first, and we didn’t think she’d grow such a full, beautiful coat.”

To everyone’s surprise, Willow transformed into a stunning Great Pyrenees, a breed known for its thick, fluffy fur and gentle demeanor.

A Happy Ending in a Forever Home
With her coat fully regrown, Willow found her forever home with a loving family. She now spends her days lounging on soft carpets, playing with her dog siblings, and receiving all the love and care she deserves.

“No one could have guessed she’d grow into this majestic Pyrenees,” Koehler remarked.

Willow’s story wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of local law enforcement. The team at It Takes A Village praised the efforts of Deputy Archer and the Louisa County Sheriff’s Office.

“We are incredibly grateful for their commitment to helping animals in need,” the rescue shared in a heartfelt Facebook post. “Willow’s life was saved because of you!”
