A Man and Dog Stranded at Sea During a Hurricane Helene

As Hurricane Helene ravaged Florida’s west coast, the U.S. Coast Guard carried out a daring rescue mission to save a man and his dog stranded at sea. Here’s how their incredible story unfolded.

Stranded at Sea During a Category 4 Hurricane

When Hurricane Helene made landfall, most residents scrambled for higher ground, preparing for storm surges and flooding. One man from Clear water faced an unimaginable situation. He and his dog were trapped on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean.

The sailboat was located roughly 25 miles off Sanibel Island. It was battered by intense winds and waves as the hurricane closed in. The United States Coast Guard’s Seventh District (USCG Southeast) quickly responded after receiving the distress call.

Brave Rescuers Respond to the Emergency

Without delay, the Coast Guard deployed their Air Station (AirSta) team. The sailboat, jostled by the massive waves, was soon located, but the conditions made the rescue incredibly challenging. AST2 Hudson was a skilled rescuer. He repelled from the helicopter into the stormy sea. He fought against 100 mph winds to get close to the boat.

Once Hudson reached the sailboat, he signaled the man and his dog, who were both wearing life jackets, to jump into the turbulent waters. With great care, the man pushed his dog into the ocean before following seconds later. Hudson wasted no time, grabbing the dog and assisting the man into the rescue basket attached to the helicopter.

“The man and his dog were reported to be in good medical condition,” USCG Southeast announced. Following the rescue, they were flown to Southwest Florida International Airport, where they were met by emergency medical services (EMS) for further evaluation.

Now safe and surrounded by support, the man and his dog are recovering from the traumatic ordeal. Though the storm has passed, they remain forever thankful to the Coast Guard heroes who risked their lives to bring them home.
