A heartwarming event recently brought together the Raleigh, N.C. community to provide free veterinary care, grooming, and supplies for unsheltered women and their pets. The event was organized by The Women’s Center and DEGA Mobile Veterinary Care. It aimed to keep these women and their beloved animals together. The event offered critical support in times of need.
The Importance of Pets for Unsheltered Women
Many unsheltered women who seek crisis intervention at The Women’s Center in Raleigh form deep bonds with their pets. For these women, their pets are more than just animals; they provide comfort, security, and companionship during incredibly challenging times. Nora Robbins works as the philanthropy and communications officer at the Center. She shared that more than 90% of the women they serve have experienced sexual trauma. Additionally, 85% have persistent mental health conditions. Because of this, pets play a critical role in their emotional healing.
“Many women would rather sleep in unsafe locations than part with their pets,” Robbins explained. “These animals act as a security measure, providing not only companionship but protection.”
The ‘No Pet Shaming Zone’: Breaking Stereotypes
The event was inspired by a simple yet powerful concept: creating a ‘No Pet Shaming Zone.’ Robbins emphasized that people often criticize unsheltered pet owners. Many argue that these individuals should give up their pets. However, The Women’s Center believes in a different approach.
“Shaming vulnerable people only isolates them further. Pets provide a sense of purpose and love that’s essential for their mental well-being,” Robbins said.
The event was designed to offer a judgment-free space. Unsheltered women could receive essential services for their pets. These services range from vaccinations to flea prevention. This service is offered without fear of criticism.
DEGA Mobile Veterinary Care’s Mission
The event was made possible by April Gessner, DVM. She is the founder of DEGA Mobile Veterinary Care. Dr. Gessner’s organization provides free veterinary care to low-income and homeless pet owners across the region. DEGA partnered with The Women’s Center to set up a clinic. The clinic offers vital services like deworming and heartworm testing. It also provides nail trims and treatment for minor illnesses.
“When I started DEGA, I wanted to focus on homeless pet owners. I quickly realized that many low-income families are on the brink of homelessness. By helping them, we could prevent more pets from ending up in shelters,” Dr. Gessner explained.
Community Support: A Day of Celebration
What began as a small event quickly blossomed into a community-wide celebration. Local businesses and individuals donated everything from pet food and supplies to free grooming services. Attendees were treated to breakfast, lunch, and even raffle prizes.
In total, 35 dogs and cats received check-ups and supplies, ensuring these cherished pets remain healthy and cared for. The event was overwhelmingly successful. The Women’s Center has been inspired to plan biannual clinics. This will ensure ongoing support for both pets and their owners.
The Healing Power of Pets
For many women, their pets offer a sense of love and respect they often feel society has stripped away. Robbins, who owns a miniature Chihuahua named Leroy, understands firsthand the therapeutic bond between humans and their pets.
“When you become homeless, you feel invisible. Pets remind these women that they are valued and needed,” Robbins shared.
Dr. Gessner echoed these sentiments. She noted that providing free veterinary care improves the physical health of the pets. Additionally, it has a profound impact on the mental health of their owners. At the event, she recalled a particularly touching moment. The last dog of the day, Shiloh, trotted away happily with a new toy in its mouth.
“It was such a sweet moment,” Gessner said. “Seeing the bond between Shiloh and his owner made all the hard work worthwhile.”
Looking Forward: A Commitment to Pets and Their Owners
The Women’s Center and DEGA Mobile Veterinary Care have committed to continuing this vital work. They plan to offer more services and supplies. Community support and ongoing donations are essential. This ensures that no woman has to choose between her safety and the companionship of her beloved pet.
