At every adoption event, he waits.
Tail wagging. Eyes hopeful. Heart wide open.
But time and again, when the doors close and the visitors leave, Darby is still there — the only one left behind.
🐾 A Call for Help That Started It All
Five months ago, Paw Squad 559, a rescue group based in Clovis, California, received a desperate call from an overcrowded shelter. They were asked to take in a tiny, 2-year-old pup named Darby, who was being passed over time after time by potential adopters.
When the team first met Darby — a 5-pound sweetheart with a huge personality — they were baffled. He was adorable, affectionate, and full of life. Why wasn’t anyone giving him a chance?
💔 The Diagnosis That Changed Everything
The mystery was quickly solved after a medical checkup. X-rays revealed that Darby’s kneecaps were fused, unlike a typical dog’s, whose kneecaps are mobile.
“The X-rays showed that where a normal dog’s kneecaps move, his were fused,”
– Helga Weiss, President of Paw Squad 559 and Darby’s foster mom
Because of this condition, Darby walks a little differently — and sadly, looks a little different, too.
And for many people, that was enough to turn away.
😢 Rejected Before He’s Even Known
Darby isn’t just ignored at adoption events — he’s actively rejected.
“People come to the events, look at him, and ask, ‘What’s wrong with that dog?’” Weiss shared.
“At one event, someone literally pushed him aside to pet another dog.”
Despite his joyful energy and loyal nature, Darby’s uniqueness has made him invisible in a world that often values perfection over personality.
🧸 A Loving Soul Losing Hope
Helga Weiss, who fosters Darby, says he’s sweet, playful, and loves other dogs. His favorite things include zooming around the yard, cuddling with his stuffed octopus. He being carried in Weiss’ purse — where he feels safe and close to someone who truly sees him.
“He does little spins when he wants to be in the purse,” Weiss said.
“He just wants someone to choose him.”
But lately, Weiss has noticed a heartbreaking shift.
“You can tell that at adoption events, he’s starting to retreat. He doesn’t approach people like he used to.”
The spark in his eyes is fading. Darby is starting to believe what the world keeps telling him — that he doesn’t belong.
💡 He Doesn’t Need Much — Just Someone Willing to See Him
Darby’s condition requires only minor accommodations — no stairs, no pool — but beyond that, he’s just like any other pup. He’s loyal. He’s goofy. He wants to be loved.
He doesn’t understand why no one wants him. But one person could change that — forever.
