A Suspicious Tote on a Detroit Street
Lilia Toscano of Detroit, Michigan, spotted a taped-up tote bag abandoned near her home—a sight that felt deeply out of place. Her instincts kicked in, and what she found inside would change her life: a shivering, terrified dog, later named Kendrick, huddled in fear.
The Rescue Mission: Neighbors and Heroes Unite
Toscano sprang into action, calling a neighbor for help. Together, they brought Kendrick indoors and contacted P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue, a local nonprofit dedicated to saving vulnerable animals. Though Kendrick refused to move, X-rays later confirmed he wasn’t physically injured—just traumatized by an unknown past.
Learning to Trust Again: A Foster Mom’s Patience
Lauren Boesen, a P.O.E.T. Animal Rescue board member, became Kendrick’s foster mom. At their first meeting, he hid in fear, but Boesen’s gentle approach—baby talk, patience, and car rides with window views—slowly melted his anxiety.
“He jumped right in the car and loved looking out the window,” Boesen shared.
But Kendrick’s challenges weren’t over. He didn’t know how to play, accept pets, or even be a dog. With time, safe spaces, and endless love, he began to blossom.
Snowflakes, Snuggles, and Second Chances
Today, Kendrick is a transformed pup. He dashes through snow, craves cuddles, and even enjoys being carried like a baby. “He’s learning the joys of being a beloved pet,” Boesen said.
While he waits for his forever family, Kendrick’s journey underscores the power of fostering. “The progress he’s made is incredible,” Boesen added. “It’s all about patience and showing them they’re safe.”
