Determined to help, Nulman had a bold idea: could a feather serve as a makeshift wing for the monarch? It sounded almost impossible, but she wasn’t willing to let the Injured butterfly’s story end in tragedy. After some research and planning, she rushed to a nearby craft store, searching for the perfect feather. Finding one that was the right size, she meticulously carved it into the shape of a butterfly wing and shaved it down to make it as light as possible.
The prosthetic was ready — now, all that remained was to attach it and hope for the best. With gentle precision, Nulman fastened the feather to the monarch’s broken wing. As she stepped back to watch the outcome, her heart raced. She had given it her all, but there was no guarantee it would work.

Day after day, Nulman worked with Nemo-Bucky, picking him up every time he fell. Each small attempt to fly ended with a short glide, followed by a tumble. Yet, each time he tried, Nemo-Bucky made a little more progress, going a few extra inches or flapping his wings with more strength. Nulman’s persistence and gentle encouragement helped the butterfly regain some of his confidence.
Slowly but surely, Nemo-Bucky’s short flights became longer. His wings grew stronger, and he began to gain control of his new prosthetic. Soon, Nulman decided it was time for the ultimate test: a practice flight outdoors.

One sunny afternoon, Nulman brought Nemo-Bucky outside to her garden. As he perched quietly on a flower, he seemed to pause for a moment. “I like to think it was his way of saying thank you,” Nulman recalled.
Then, in a moment that Nulman will never forget, Nemo-Bucky spread his wings, and without hesitation, took off into the sky. He fluttered out of her sight, leaving Nulman overwhelmed with a bittersweet mix of emotions. She had succeeded in helping him regain his freedom, but she wasn’t ready for him to leave.
“He was ready to go. I wasn’t ready to see him leave,” Nulman said, reflecting on the emotional goodbye. After all the time they had spent together, it was hard to let him go.
