Mariah Carey announced on Monday that her mother Patricia and sister Alison both passed away on the same day. Carey expressed her heartbreak over losing her mother and sister in a tragic turn of events. She shared that she was grateful to have spent the last week with her mom before she passed. She asked for privacy during this difficult time.
Alison, who was estranged from Carey, passed away at the age of 63. She died due to complications with her organ performance after being in hospice care. Patricia, a Juilliard-trained opera singer, was an inspiration to Carey from a young age. Patricia and Alfred Roy Carey, Mariah Carey’s father, were formerly married. After their divorce, Carey primarily lived with her mother. Her father passed away from cancer in 2002 at the age of 72.
In her 2020 memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” the singer detailed her complex relationship with her mother and sister. She described conflicting emotions and a complicated love that connected her to her mother. Despite the challenges, Carey maintained contact with her mother. She even recorded a duet with her for her second Christmas album in 2010.
