In a surprising turn of events, Robert Saleh, head coach of the New York Jets, was fired on Tuesday. This decision caught not only fans but Saleh himself off guard. Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported the news. The now-former coach was completely “blindsided.” Jets owner Woody Johnson informed him of his removal.
Saleh Shocked by Dismissal
Glazer reported that Saleh expressed shock at the decision. He believed he was still in the process of building a competitive roster. The former head coach had confidence in the team’s potential. He felt disappointed because he wouldn’t be given the opportunity to see things through.
“I just talked to Robert Saleh. He said he was blindsided by Woody Johnson walking into his office. Woody Johnson let him go. Glazer posted on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He was certainly disappointed. He wasn’t going to be allowed to get things going with what he said is a very good roster.
Swift Exit from Jets Facility
NBC Sports also reported that shortly after Saleh was fired. The team’s director of security escorted him out of the Jets’ facility. This further emphasizes the abrupt nature of the decision. Saleh’s final moments with the organization were a far cry from what he expected, having just held an optimistic press conference a day earlier.
Woody Johnson’s Statement
In an official statement released Tuesday morning, Johnson acknowledged Saleh’s hard work but cited unmet expectations as the reason behind the decision to move on.
“This was not an easy decision, but we are not where we should be given our expectations, and I believe now is the best time for us to move in a different direction,” Johnson said.
Jets Struggling Despite High Hopes
The Jets currently sit at a 2-3 record, coming off back-to-back losses. The offense, led by veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, has struggled in recent games, adding to the team’s woes. However, Saleh remained hopeful, stating just a day before his firing that the standings could drastically change by the end of the season.
“The reality is what the standings look like now are going to be completely different at the end of the season. There’s so much football to be played,” Saleh remarked during his final press conference. He highlighted areas for improvement and continued optimism, despite recent setbacks.
Saleh’s Jets Record
Robert Saleh’s tenure with the New York Jets spanned three seasons, during which he accumulated a 20-36 record but failed to secure any playoff appearances. His firing marks the end of a turbulent time with the team, which saw a mix of high expectations and underwhelming results.
