To keep track of Max’s progress, the shelter created a hilarious sign for his cage, tracking his “no-smacking streaks.” Every day Max goes without smacking someone, staff add a day to his streak. His record? Four days. But as of now, he’s back to zero—proof that Max keeps everyone on their toes.

Described as a “cranky old man,” Max isn’t mean—he’s just particular. “It’s not that he’s a bad cat,” Marcotullio explains. “He just gets overstimulated, and when he’s had enough, he’s had enough.”
The staff has learned to work with Max’s quirks. During cage cleanings, they let him roam the shelter with other cats to avoid overwhelming him. And when they need to get back in his good graces? They turn to his favorite treats. “He’s a treat monster,” Marcotullio says. “The way to his heart is with canned food or Temptations treats.”

While the shelter staff loves Max’s spicy personality, they’re hoping he’ll find his forever home soon. “As much as we’re having fun with it, we really want him to go to a forever home,” Marcotullio says. “He deserves to get out of here and find his people.”
