For over a week, a terrified black dog with hollow eyes and a frail body wandered the streets of Youngstown, Ohio, dodging every hand that tried to help her. Limping and emaciated, it was clear she had been abandoned — left to survive the cold pavement and her growing fear alone.
But her story was far from over.
“She was limping and very frail,” shared Megan Zarlenga of the Mahoning County Dog Warden. “Deputy Keith Stokes recognized her from previous rescue attempts, but she just wouldn’t let anyone close.”
Every time help came near, she ran. Until one powerful moment changed everything.
💔 A Broken Soul Too Scared to Hope
On a quiet Wednesday, Deputy Stokes and Youngstown Police Officer Megan Feidler spotted the dog again. But something in the officer’s heart told her this time needed to be different. No chasing. No commands. Just empathy.
Megan did something unexpected.
She sat down on the ground — eye-level, vulnerable — and waited.
“She was obviously scared and very skinny,” Feidler recalled. “I just started talking to her, telling her it was OK. Eventually, she laid down next to me. I kept petting her, letting her know she was safe.”
And in that moment, the walls came down.
The frightened pup, starved for comfort, leaned in and accepted the only thing she hadn’t had in a long time — kindness.
💤 She Fell Asleep the Moment She Felt Safe
Once Megan gently secured the leash, the dog was lifted into the safety of the van. There, something incredible happened — she immediately closed her eyes and fell asleep.
“She was completely exhausted,” Zarlenga said. “Like she could finally let go.”
She had survived the streets. And now, she was heading toward healing.
🏥 A Broken Hip, But Not a Broken Spirit
In the care of Friends of Fido Animal Rescue, vets discovered that the dog — now named Maeve — had a broken hip. No one knows how long she suffered, or what cruelty she endured. But Maeve’s body may have been bruised — her soul? Still fighting.
She’s now receiving medical treatment, nourishing meals, and above all — love.
“We don’t know what she’s been through,” Zarlenga said, “but she has a bright future ahead. So many people are cheering her on.”

Feidler’s quiet act of compassion has captured hearts around the world. Social media users have called her an “angel” — the woman who sat in silence, listened with love, and helped Maeve believe in humans again.
“I was just happy,” Feidler said softly. “Because now she can get the care she needs and find a home that will love her unconditionally.”
