In Lake Mary, Florida, a dramatic rescue unfolded. A helpless four-month-old kitten found itself trapped in a deep storm drain. A severe thunderstorm was looming. The Seminole County Fire Department (SCFD) and Seminole County Animal Services (SCAS) teamed up. Together, they saved the tiny life from what could have been a tragic end.

It all began when passersby heard faint cries coming from the drain. With heavy rain threatening to flood the area, the first responders knew they had to act fast. The Trapped kitten was stuck underground, and time was running out.

Firefighter and paramedic Dave Gomez led the charge. As the skies darkened, he and his team worked tirelessly to bring the kitten to safety. After several failed attempts to coax the kitten out with traps, the team switched to a more hands-on approach.

SCFD firefighters went directly into the storm drain. They removed the heavy grate cover. Gomez descended into the catch basin. He was armed with a ladder and a can of cat food to lure the frightened kitten out.

At first, the kitten refused to move, but Gomez patiently persisted. With persistence, he managed to coax the little tabby to the edge of the pipe. As the kitten hesitantly inched toward the food, Gomez was ready. In a swift move, he grabbed the kitten before it could retreat.

The SCAS team shared, “The rescue came just in the nick of time. A downpour washed out the storm drain within the hour.”

Once safe, the tiny gray tabby was named Dave in honor of his rescuer. He was taken to SCAS. There, he was given a clean bill of health and a hearty meal. Dave’s incredible rescue story spread across social media, and within just eight days, he found a loving forever home. His new family, touched by his ordeal, renamed him Apollo.

“[Apollo] didn’t spend much time with us at all after his post on our social media.” Bree Burkett, the program coordinator for SCAS, shared this. “He spent eight days here at the shelter before being neutered and adopted by his new family.”

Apollo, once trapped underground, now enjoys the comforts of his new home. He feels safe and sound. From his cozy bed, he watches every storm. He no longer fears the rain that nearly swept him away.
