Renowned TV presenter Oriini Kaipara made headlines in 2021 when she became the first person to host a primetime news show with a moko kauae, a traditional Māori facial tattoo. After enduring ongoing criticism, Kaipara finally responded publicly. Sharing her reply on Instagram, she calmly but firmly addressed the viewer’s ignorance.
In her email, she corrected the mispronunciation of moko and emphasized its cultural significance:
“Moko are ancient cultural markings unique to the indigenous people of Aotearoa. We mean no harm nor deserve such discrimination, harassment, and prejudice.”
She ended her response by urging the critic to leave his outdated biases in “the 1800s.”

While the complaints came from a vocal minority, Kaipara received overwhelming support from fans and advocates. Many praised her for standing firm in her cultural identity. Comments such as:
