Woman Finds Heartbroken Dog Sleeping in a Garbage Pile and Saves His Life

In October 2017, Donna Lochmann, a life-saving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL), was out responding to a tip about a stray dog in need. As she searched the city streets, her attention was drawn to a slight movement atop a pile of garbage. Curiosity led her closer. Hidden amongst the trash, she found a dog curled up in a tight ball. The dog was barely visible due to his dark fur blending in with the surroundings.

The dog was heartbreakingly thin, with his ribs clearly showing, indicating he hadn’t been cared for in months. As Lochmann approached, she noticed his hollow, despairing eyes. Despite his situation, the dog didn’t try to run or resist. It was as if he had given up all hope, expecting to be abandoned yet again. Lochmann couldn’t walk away. She gently scooped him up. She spoke soothingly to reassure him. Then, she carried him to her vehicle. There, she laid him on a pile of blankets.

She named the dog Kismet, meaning “fate,” because she felt their meeting was destined. Upon arrival at SRSL, the team worked to help Kismet gain weight and regain his strength. Soon, he was placed into a foster home with a loving caretaker named Nikki, who followed his treatment plan closely. With time, Kismet started to wag his tail and enjoy his new life, slowly shedding his past sadness.

It didn’t take long for Nikki to fall in love with Kismet, and she eventually made the decision to adopt him. Today, Kismet is a completely transformed dog, living happily with his forever family. His story is one of resilience, showing that love and care can change everything, no matter how dire the circumstances.

Kismet is a reminder that even those left in the most hopeless situations deserve a chance at happiness.
