The world’s oldest living person, Spanish pensioner Maria Branyas Morera, has passed away at the age of 117. Her family announced her peaceful passing in her sleep. Maria spent the last 20 years of her life at the Santa Maria del Tura nursing home in Olot. This nursing home is located in northeastern Spain. She celebrated her 117th birthday in March.
Maria Branyas Morera was officially recognized as the world’s oldest person in January 2023. This occurred after the death of French nun Lucile Randon, who lived to be 118 years old. Japan’s Tomiko Itooka was born on May 23, 1908. She is currently the oldest living person at 116 years old. This is according to the US Gerontology Research Group. The title of the oldest person ever lived belongs to Jeanne Louise Calment. She lived to be 122 years and 164 days old. This is according to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Maria Branyas Morera was born in San Francisco in 1907 during the second wave of the Bubonic plague. Her family returned to Spain in 1915 due to her father’s illness during World War I. Maria survived the Spanish flu pandemic, the Spanish Civil War, and even Covid-19. She attributed her old age to “order, tranquility, and staying away from toxic people”. She was known to live a stress-free existence. At the age of 92, she moved to a sheltered housing in Olot. She continued to lead an active and healthy lifestyle.
Maria Branyas Morera was married at the age of 23 and had three children, 11 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. She emphasized the importance of living stress-free. She was an active user of social media. She regularly updated her 16,000 followers on her health and well-being.
Maria Branyas Morera survived a Covid-19 scare when she tested positive just weeks after her 113th birthday in 2020. Fortunately, she recovered within days and became the world’s oldest Covid-19 survivor at the time. In December 2022, she shared tips on diet and praised the health benefits of yogurt to her followers.
