A Nervous Mother and Family Abandoned, Shocking Discovery

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the security team at Kloof and Highway SPCA made a shocking discovery. At the end of the shelter’s driveway, they found a dog tied to a signpost. But this wasn’t just any dog. Upon closer inspection, the team realized it was an entire family of five. There was a mama dog and her four puppies. They were all huddled together, braving the cold.

A Disturbing Discovery of a Struggling Family

Inspector Kerrie Andrews, from Kloof and Highway SPCA, was called to the scene promptly. Immediately, she thought she was responding to a single dog in distress. However, upon arrival, she found a sight that broke her heart. The mama dog was tied to the post. Her puppies, though free, refused to leave her side. Curled up for warmth, it was clear that this little family had been abandoned.

It was a chilly morning, and no one knew how long the dogs had been left there. Their survival instincts were clear — sticking together was their only way of staying safe and warm.

A Careful Rescue for a Nervous Mother

Inspector Andrews approached the family cautiously, knowing the mother dog would be frightened. “Mom was nervous and didn’t trust me at first,” said Andrews. “But with some gentle talking and patience, she soon realized she was safe.” The puppies, though less wary, were simply relieved to stay close to their mother and escape the cold.

Once Inspector Andrews gained their trust, she successfully brought the entire family into the warmth and safety of the shelter.

Rehabilitation: From Fear to Trust

Inside the shelter, the dogs were promptly cared for. The staff ensured the little family was warm. They placed the puppies and their mother under a heating lamp with cozy beds and hot water bottles. They also provided much-needed food to help Mama regain her strength so she could continue caring for her pups.

“Mom was underweight and had ticks, fleas, and worms. We treated her for these right away,” said Brigitte Ferguson, marketing assistant at Kloof and Highway SPCA. Despite being scared at first, the mama dog soon began to relax, realizing she was finally in a safe space.

A New Beginning for the Entire Family

In the weeks following their rescue, the mama dog gained weight and started to look much healthier. Though still cautious around strangers, she quickly warms up to those who show her love and care. Her puppies, on the other hand, are thriving — healthy, playful, and full of energy.

Soon, this resilient little family will be ready for adoption. The staff at Kloof and Highway SPCA can’t wait to help them find their forever homes.

A Chance for a Happier Future

The bond between this mother and her pups is undeniable. They will forever be grateful to the team that rescued them. Now, with the worst behind them, these dogs are on the path to finding the loving families they deserve.

Stay tuned for updates and adoption details.
