Pile of Puppies: It was an ordinary day for two adventurers hiking through the tranquil woods of Missouri. The pair had set out hoping to enjoy nature, unwind, and reconnect with the world around them. But what they found that day was far from ordinary—it was a life-saving discovery.
Just off the main trail, the hikers noticed something unusual. A small mound of fur was nestled next to a tree trunk. Curious, they walked closer, not knowing what to expect. As they got closer, the pile began to move ever so slightly, revealing a heartwarming yet alarming sight—newborn pile of puppies.
A Mother’s Silent Plea for Help
As the Good Samaritans took in the scene, they quickly realized these puppies weren’t alone. Nearby, a skinny mother dog lay quietly watching her babies. Despite the hikers’ presence, the mother didn’t run away or show any aggression. Instead, she seemed to avoid their gaze, too exhausted and frightened to do anything but stay by her puppies’ side.
“She was doing everything she could to avoid eye contact,” Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL) shared on Facebook. The mother dog appeared desperate but also cautious. Her body showed signs of malnourishment and extreme fatigue, as though she had given every ounce of strength she had to keep her pups alive. Though she wouldn’t meet their eyes, her message was clear—she needed help.

Gaining Trust and Offering Rescue To Pile of Puppies
The hikers knew they had to act quickly if the mother dog and her puppies were going to survive. However, they understood that rushing in too fast might scare the mother away or put the pups in danger. With patience, they worked to earn the frightened dog’s trust. Slowly but surely, they were able to approach her without causing alarm.
Once the mother dog seemed calm enough, the hikers carefully gathered the entire family—the mother and her 10 tiny pups—and carried them to their vehicle. Without wasting any time, they headed straight to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, where the little family would receive the care they desperately needed.
Puppies Healthy, Mom in Critical Condition
Upon arrival at SRSL, the puppies were immediately examined. To the staff’s surprise, the puppies were generally healthy, with their tiny bellies full, despite the harsh conditions they had been living in. Their mother, however, told a different story.
“She is so nurturing,” one of the rescuers shared. “It’s clear that she gave everything to these puppies.” While the puppies were thriving, the mother dog was severely underweight and dehydrated. It was obvious that she had been sacrificing her own well-being to ensure her babies had a chance at survival.
The SRSL team quickly sprang into action, providing the exhausted mother with food, water, and a quiet space to recover. While her body was frail, her determination to care for her babies was evident. Despite being wary of people, she allowed the staff to handle her pups and pet her, though she remained shy.
Naming the Resilient Family
As the team worked to find an emergency foster home for the family, they couldn’t help but feel inspired by the mama dog’s incredible resilience. The day the family was rescued happened to coincide with SRSL’s annual golf tournament fundraiser, so the staff decided to give the little family golf-themed names.
The mother was named “Mary, Queen of Scots,” after the first recorded female golfer. Her puppies were given playful, dog-themed versions of famous golfer names, including Tiger Woofs, Ricky Howler, and Arnold Pawmer. The names fit perfectly, as these pile of puppies were ready to tee off into a better life.
A Foster Home Brings Hope
A few days later, SRSL found the perfect foster home for Mary, Queen of Scots, and her puppies. Megan Percell, a dedicated foster mom, welcomed the family into her home with open arms. Under her care, the mother dog was given unlimited food and the space she needed to finally relax and heal. With round-the-clock love and attention, Mary and her puppies began their journey toward recovery.
“We are so thankful that one of our foster families stepped up to help,” SRSL shared. “Mary can now get the calories and nourishment she needs while continuing to care for her babies.”

A Brighter Future Ahead
As Mary, Queen of Scots, and her puppies continue to thrive in their foster home, the team at SRSL is optimistic about their future. Once the puppies are old enough, they will be ready for adoption, and SRSL hopes to find loving forever homes for all of them. In the meantime, Mary is enjoying the warmth, food, and love she deserves.
Thanks to the brave actions of two hikers and the dedicated staff at Stray Rescue of St. Louis, 11 lives were saved that day. Mary and her puppies are now on the road to a bright and happy future.
