At 13 years old, Raina has never let her disabilities slow her down. Born both blind and deaf, this remarkable Australian shepherd is living proof that special-needs dogs can thrive. Her story is not only a testament to her resilience but also an inspiration to everyone she meets.
Raina was adopted by Kristen Strouse of Perkasie, Pennsylvania, when she was just 6 months old. Raina was born a double merle. This is a genetic condition that caused her white coat. It also caused her blindness and deafness. Raina’s disabilities have never been a hindrance to her joyful life. Strouse, a lifelong dog owner, saw Raina’s photo online and instantly knew she had to adopt her. Without hesitation, she applied through the Blind Dog Rescue Alliance, and Raina quickly found her forever home.
Once home, Raina adjusted quickly, thanks to Strouse and her other dogs, including a German shepherd named Millie. Despite her lack of sight and hearing, Raina learned her surroundings and embraced her new life with confidence and joy.
Strouse soon realized that Raina had the power to inspire others. She began bringing Raina to pet and community events. She wanted to educate the public about what it’s like to care for a blind dog. Raina quickly became a symbol of hope. She showed that dogs with disabilities can live full, enriching lives. In turn, they can enrich the lives of their families.
Together, Strouse and Raina launched the Lending a Paw program. It is a series of fundraising concerts that Strouse, a music teacher, organized with her students. Their mission? To raise awareness and encourage people to adopt special-needs dogs.
“I think when people see dogs like Raina out in public, they’re more open to the idea of adopting a special-needs dog. The more people meet them, the more they realize that these dogs are just as capable of living a full life. They can also live a happy life.”
Despite her disabilities, Raina has lived an active life filled with swimming, hiking, and, of course, sniffing out treats. Strouse notes, “Raina doesn’t let her disabilities hold her back. She’s such a sweet, happy girl. For a dog who was born different, you’d think it could limit her, but she just doesn’t know any better.”
Raina’s positive spirit continues to touch the hearts of those around her. “People are astounded by her,” says Strouse. “They realize that disability is not disabling—it means possibility. Seeing Raina inspires people to face their own challenges. They know that if this little dog can navigate the world without sight or hearing, they can overcome their obstacles too.”
Raina has been a constant source of inspiration not just for the public, but also for Strouse herself. In 2015, Strouse faced her own health struggles, and Raina became her reason to keep going. “Raina gave my life meaning and purpose when I needed it most,” Strouse says. “She’s always been there for me, through the good times and the hard times. More good times than not!”
Raina’s story has earned her a nomination for the American Humane’s Hero Dog Awards. She is nominated in the Emerging Hero and Shelter categories. Voting is open through August 24, and Raina continues to inspire those who meet her.
Her journey is a reminder that no obstacle is too great. It can be overcome with love, determination, and a positive spirit. Raina’s story is a beacon of hope for anyone considering adopting a special-needs dog. It shows that they too can bring immense joy and inspiration to the world.
