Rescuing a Stray, How It Changed My Life Forever

During a lunch break at work, I spotted a stray dog outside my office building. He was wagging his tail, full of joy. He tried to approach people on the busy sidewalk. No one paid him any attention. With high-traffic avenues nearby, I knew he was in danger, so I made a quick decision and scooped him up.

This scruffy little mutt, around a year old, was dirty, covered in fleas and ticks, but his spirit was unbroken. From the moment we met, it was clear—he absolutely loved people and other dogs. His kind nature was immediately evident, though now and then, glimpses of his rough past still show through.

A Cautious Eater

One of the first signs of his street life came during meal times. He’s not a picky eater, but he approaches new food with caution. Every time I give him something new, he performs a little ritual. He picks it up, sets it down, inspects it, sniffs it, licks it, and even taps it with his paw. Finally, he decides it’s safe to eat. Once a food passes his test, he’s fine with it in the future. I often wonder if, as a stray, he ate something that made him sick, which makes him so careful now.

A Glimpse into His Past

I pulled off my belt quickly, raising my arm, and without thinking, I saw my dog cower in fear. His reaction made my heart sink. It was the only time I’d ever seen him scared. It was the only time I’d ever seen him scared. That moment was a stark reminder of the life he must have endured on the streets.

Curiosity About His Past

Despite everything, he’s always been a resilient, happy dog, full of life. I wonder where he came from, and what breeds his parents were. I wonder if he ever had a home or if he was abandoned. Was he lost? What was his life like before he found me?

Making a Difference

Though I’ll never know his full story, I do know this: dogs are incredibly resilient. My boy, like many others, held on to his good nature. I’m grateful every day for the decision to rescue him. For anyone considering adopting or rescuing a stray, know this—you’re not just giving them a home. You’re giving them a new life, filled with love and security. And in return, they’ll fill your life with unconditional love, joy, and endless companionship.

Adopting him wasn’t just a change for him—it changed me, too.
