Taylor, Megan, Chappell and Sabrina Turn the 2024 VMAs Into a Real Live Party

Rob Sheffield on why this year’s MTV VMAs felt like a massive pop party

The MTV Video Music Awards turned 40, and for once, MTV actually tried to honor its legacy. This year’s show was packed with throwback moments from past VMAs. Some memorable moments include Madonna and Britney’s infamous kiss in 2003. Another was Beyoncé’s pregnancy reveal in 2011. Finally, Michael Jackson’s awkward appearance with Lisa Marie Presley in 1994 stood out. He joked, “Just think — nobody thought this would last” (and it didn’t). Let’s not forget Madonna writhing on stage in a wedding dress back in 1985. Also, Taylor Swift serenaded commuters on a NYC subway in 2009.

And, of course, MTV playing music in 2024. Just kidding — no footage of that one.

This year, the VMAs really felt like a big pop celebration. There were star-studded performances from Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Karol G. The night’s host was Megan Thee Stallion. Megan even joked, “Tonight, VMAs stands for Voluptuous Megan Awards.”

Taylor Swift was the night’s big winner. She kicked off and closed the show with wins for her collab with Post Malone on “Fortnite.” But, surprisingly, Taylor didn’t take the opportunity to drop any big news. No new album announcement, no “Reputation TV,” no Broadway musical (Female Rage: The Musical), and no political aspirations (yet). She just encouraged everyone to get out and vote. It was a subtle power move. It came right after her perfectly timed endorsement of Kamala Harris. This ushered in Taylor’s new era of “Childless Cat Lady” electoral activism.
