Tears as Dog Found Nearly Drowning After Hurricane Is Scared of Rain: Maggie’s story

A pit bull named Maggie, who continues to fear rain after nearly drowning in a hurricane, has touched the hearts of millions online. Maggie’s story is a testament to the resilience of rescue dogs, and her journey from near-drowning to finding a loving home has inspired many.

Maggie’s Rescue: A Survivor of a Tropical Storm

Maggie, now known on social media as @maggiepotamus_, was rescued from Texas after a devastating tropical storm. She had been left chained in a backyard breeding setup when the storm hit. Her harrowing experience of survival left a deep emotional scar. “She was found swimming to keep her head above the flooded yard, as all the other dogs on the property drowned,” said Jennifer Lee, Maggie’s owner.

The video of Maggie sheltering anxiously from the rain under an awning near her home has garnered over 2.4 million views and 246,400 likes on social media, with viewers moved by her heartbreaking backstory.

Maggie’s life didn’t get easier after her rescue. She spent six months in a high-kill shelter before finally finding temporary safety with the Humane Society of Washington, where she stayed for another three months, becoming the longest-residing dog at the shelter. Her stress levels were so high that she began exhibiting self-harming behaviors.

Jennifer Lee, now 30, found Maggie after requesting the Humane Society to show her the dogs that needed the most help. “I brought her home as a foster, and she immediately jumped on my bed like she belonged there,” said Lee. “I fell in love with her right away and officially adopted her the next day.”

Maggie’s New Life and Ongoing Fear of Rain

Since being adopted in February 2019, Maggie has flourished. However, the trauma from her past remains, especially when it rains. For dogs like Maggie who are fearful of storms, experts recommend comforting strategies such as creating a cozy, safe space or using pheromone diffusers to ease their anxiety.

Now estimated to be 10 or 11 years old, Maggie has grown into a playful, sweet dog. According to Lee, “Maggie is super stubborn and knows exactly what she wants, but she’s incredibly gentle with children.” Maggie even has a unique bond with a local murder of crows that often follows her in the park.

Maggie’s Story Highlights the Importance of Rescue Dogs

Lee hopes that Maggie’s story will raise awareness about the resilience of rescue dogs. “Rescuing a dog forces us to recognize that dogs have their own needs and desires. It challenges us to empathize with how they navigate a world that doesn’t always align with their nature,” she said.

Maggie’s story has sparked emotional responses from many. One commenter shared their experience, writing, “My first dog was a Hurricane Katrina survivor, and he’d only get on the furniture during thunderstorms.” Another viewer mentioned, “All I can think about are the animals left behind during Hurricane Helene.”

Maggie’s journey of survival, healing, and her continued fear of rain shows the deep emotional impact of rescue dogs, reminding us all of their incredible resilience and need for empathy.
