Tears Of Joy As Cancer Survivor Re-Adopts Dog He Was Forced To Surrender

For years, Minnie and her owner were inseparable companions, rarely leaving one another’s side. And the same held true when the he received the devastating news that he had rare form of cancer.

But two years ago, the sad realities of Minnie’s owner’s worsening condition ultimately forced the pair to part.

“She was his constant; his source of comfort in the hardest days,” the Humane Society of Greater Niagara wrote in a post. “But as the treatments progressed, his health worsened, and he had to make a heart-wrenching decision — to find someone who could care for her when he no longer could.”

Minnie’s owner surrendered her to the shelter — but even in his darkest days, she never left his heart.

As Minnie’s owner underwent treatment, his dog faced her own struggles, sitting at the shelter watching potential adopters pass her by.

“For the first time since the day she was born, Minnie was separated from him,” the shelter wrote. “And even while he battled cancer, he thought of her every single day, carrying her dog tags in his wallet and visiting the shelter just to catch a glimpse of her from afar.”

Years passed without Minnie finding a forever home to fill void left when she and her beloved owner were forced apart. But this August came something even better.

“[Minnie’s owner] got the news that he had prayed for — he was in remission,” the shelter wrote. “His first thought? Minnie. He went to our website, clinging to the hope she was still here. When he saw her face staring back at him on the screen, tears filled his eyes.”

He rushed to the shelter to reunite with Minnie — and to re-adopt her into the home they’d once shared.

Here’s that moment on video:

For the shelter, it was the best possible outcome — thanks to the efforts of volunteers and staff — and, of course, the pair’s undying commitment to one another.

“After 750 days and a failed adoption, Minnie is back where she belongs,” the shelter wrote. “She has her dad, a forever home, and a special place in all our hearts. We’ll miss her at HSGN, but knowing she’s finally home fills us with joy. Here’s to Minnie and her dad, a love that never gave up.”
