The traumatic event unfolded when Abbie was taken from her hospital cot in 1994. For 16 agonizing days, her parents, Roger and Karen, endured a nightmare, waiting for any news of their missing newborn. A crucial police tip eventually led to Julie Kelley, a former dental nurse, who had taken Abbie home after faking a pregnancy.
Kelley was later charged and treated for a personality disorder. To rebuild their lives, the Humphries family relocated to New Zealand, seeking a fresh start.
A Life Marked by Strength and Tragedy
Abbie grew up in the shadow of her infamous kidnapping. She described how her father, Roger, remained deeply affected by the event, experiencing moments of anxiety and guilt over her safety. Despite the challenges, Abbie maintained a positive outlook, often focusing on the brighter side of life.
However, in 2020, tragedy struck the family again when Karen, Abbie’s mother, passed away from breast cancer at the age of 59. On December 9, 2024, Abbie’s husband, Karl Sundgren, shared the devastating news of her passing. “She fought so hard with so much strength and grace for over four years and can finally rest,” Karl said, adding, “Her infectious smile will forever remain in our hearts.”
Abbie’s journey inspired countless people, who flooded social media with tributes. One mourner wrote, “Rest in peace, beautiful Abbie. I miss you so much already.”
