A Republican candidate for governor in North Carolina, Mark Robinson, is standing firm in his campaign. He faces allegations stemming from controversial remarks he made over a decade ago on an adult forum. Reports from CNN suggest that Robinson referred to himself as a “black Nazi”. He used the username “minisoldr” while visiting the website Nude Africa between 2008 and 2012. He has dismissed these claims as “salacious tabloid lies.”
Robinson is facing pressure from within the Republican Party. Members of Donald Trump’s campaign are also urging him to withdraw from the race. However, Robinson remains undeterred. Trump endorsed Robinson and praised him as “Martin Luther King on steroids.” He did not comment on the controversy during a recent event addressing antisemitism.
At 56, Robinson, a former furniture manufacturer, made history in 2020 as North Carolina’s first black lieutenant governor. He secured the Republican nomination for governor in March. He is now set to challenge Democratic candidate Josh Stein, the state’s attorney general.
The CNN report highlighted Robinson’s past comments on the adult forum, where he expressed enjoyment of specific adult content. Despite the backlash, Robinson has not apologized for his past statements. These include previous comments about education related to “transgenderism and homosexuality.”
In a video response posted to X (formerly Twitter), Robinson insisted that the statements are not his own. He emphasized his commitment to the race. He labeled the situation a “high-tech lynching” by his opponent. Stein’s campaign responded by stating that “North Carolinians already know Mark Robinson is completely unfit to be governor.”
The North Carolina Republican Party has come to Robinson’s defense, accusing the left of launching personal attacks against him. Meanwhile, recent polls indicate that Stein, a Harvard-educated lawyer, has a strong lead in the gubernatorial race.
As the election approaches, early voting begins in less than a month, and postal ballots are set to be mailed soon. The political landscape in North Carolina is tense, with both parties actively campaigning in this historically Republican stronghold, where Trump narrowly defeated Joe Biden in 2020 by less than 2%.
Democrats, including Kamala Harris, are focused on flipping North Carolina in the upcoming elections, making this race critical for both parties.
