Miami Resident Builds Shelter for Local Stray Cats
In Miami, Xilenia Mena noticed that her neighborhood’s stray cats would be exposed to life-threatening conditions. She couldn’t stand the thought of them facing the storm alone. To help, she set up a cozy makeshift shelter on her porch, which was protected by storm shutters.
Mena provided cat beds, blankets, food, and even sprinkled catnip to encourage the cats to settle in. Within minutes, they were curled up in safety, escaping the harsh weather outside.
“It breaks my heart to imagine them being so scared,” Mena shared in a TikTok video. “Everyone deserves to feel safe.”
Stray Cat “Tangerine” Finds a Temporary Home
Tampa resident Casey Corley also decided to open her home to a stray cat, nicknaming him Tangerine. Despite the chaos outside, Tangerine quickly adapted to indoor life. He spent his time napping and making biscuits on Corley’s furniture.
Corley’s dogs welcomed the newcomer. The sight of them cuddled up together during the storm brought a sense of peace amidst the chaos.
Tampa Resident Saves Four Cats
Bobbie Yvonne is another resident of Tampa. She took in four stray cats from her neighborhood. Hurricane Milton bore down on the area at the time. Yvonne stocked up on essential supplies. She included cat food and litter to ensure they were well cared for during the storm.
“I can’t take any chances,” Yvonne said in a TikTok. She expressed her deep concern for the animals by saying, “I feel bad for the ones I couldn’t catch.”
Strays Adjust to Indoor Life During the Storm
Kelly Garrison, who also brought in neighborhood cats, observed that the normally outdoor-loving cats didn’t resist being indoors. “They never like to be inside. They must know that something’s going on,” she said in a TikTok video, comforting the cats as they snuggled close.
A Happy Ending for Stray Cats
Many stray cats were kept safe from harm as Hurricane Milton moved past Florida. This was thanks to the generous hearts of residents. Some cats might return to the streets. Others may have found permanent homes with those who offered them refuge in a time of need.
