A Florida state trooper showed compassion and bravery. The trooper waded into rising flood waters to save a helpless dog. The dog had been left tied to a fence during Hurricane Milton’s evacuation in Tampa, Florida. As the city emptied ahead of the intensifying storm, the city emptied. One abandoned resident—a white bull terrier-mix—was stuck. The dog was unable to escape the surging floodwaters.
A Desperate Situation Unfolds
This poor dog was tied to a fence along the I-75 highway near Bruce B. Downs Boulevard. It stood in stark contrast to the evacuees driving to safety. The dog was left to fend for himself against the deadly storm. Thankfully, a Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) trooper found him just in time.
“[Florida Highway Patrol] troopers rescued a dog left tied to a pole on I-75,” FHP Tampa shared on X. “Do NOT do this to your pets, please …”
A Courageous Rescue
Initially, the frightened pup was defensive, growling and refusing to let the trooper near. But the determined state trooper gently reassured him, saying, “It’s OK, buddy. I don’t blame you.” Slowly, he earned the dog’s trust.
The floodwaters rose to the dog’s chest. The trooper waded through the water. He untied the dog from the fence and carefully lifted him into his patrol car. From there, the dog was rushed to a nearby veterinarian for an urgent checkup.
A Happy Outcome
[FHP Tampa] rescued the dog. It is safe and receiving care,” Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) reported. Fortunately, the pup was given a clean bill of health after being examined for injuries.
Officials are still looking for a loving home for the rescued dog. First responders are urging the public not to abandon pets in emergency situations. “Remember your pets if you are evacuating,” FLHSMV warned, sharing resources for pet-friendly evacuation shelters.
This story highlights the importance of including pets in evacuation plans during natural disasters. Thanks to the brave efforts of the state trooper, this abandoned dog now has a second chance at life.
